NAIDOC DAY 2016

Today, Tighes Hill Public School had their NAIDOC celebrations. We celebrated the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The students took part in bead art, dancing, face painting, a traditional smoking ceremony and got to try some Kangaroo.
We had a special performance from the Millibah Cultural Group from the Hunter School of Performing Arts.
A massive thank you to Miss Chapman and the Aboriginal Education Commitee for organising such an excellent day and well done to our students for their enthusiasm and respectful behaviour.

Careers through Reading

Every Wednesday, for four weeks, Year 5 students are participating in a careers through reading program with students from Newcastle University.

The program involves University students reading to small groups of primary school children books that are related to the Key Learning Areas the students are studying. This allows both Uni and school students to share their current experiences of education and aspiration to eventual professions in a friendly and non-threatening space.

Year 5 are loving this experience. Have a look at our photos.

Speak Off!

Last week, students in Stages 2 and 3 presented speeches in class on ‘Important people in Australian History’ and ‘Extreme weather Phenomena’. The best speakers from each class were then invited to present their speech at our Speak Off Competition, which was held yesterday!  A big congratulations to Jamie, Jessamy, Connor and Jonte from 5/6D who presented their excellent speeches in front of a packed crowd in the upper hall.

A big thank you to Ms Armstrong for organising the Speak Off and to all the parents who came to watch.

Well done to Olivia Collins and Ember Garbutt who took out first and second place in stage 3 and to Georgie Van Leeuwen and Jules Puxty in Stage 2.

Dancing through the decades Disco

Last night the SRC held their very first disco for the year. The theme was ‘Dancing through the decades’ and it was great to see so many gangsters, hippies, afro’s and even a special guest appearance from the ghost of Elvis Presley.

A massive thank you to DJ Mixalot who flew in from London to guest DJ for the night at such a discounted rate. A big thank you to the teachers who came and an even bigger thank you to all the students who came and danced the night away! It was our most successful SRC disco yet!

Have a look at our amazing photos.

Musica Viva 2016

Today, K-6 attended a live music show by MAKUKUHAN called Satu, dua, Indonesia!

“This is about as far away from the Western musical tradition as it gets. Makukuhan is a mini gamelan orchestra, which brings that distinctive and stirring Indonesian sound to life. Using traditional masked dance and instruments like the kendang, angklung and rebana, Satu, dua, Indonesia! is the perfect window into the exotic music of our northern neighbours. Three outstanding Indonesian musicians explore a number of styles from Bali and Java, with a focus on melodic percussion and rhythm. You don’t need to go all the way to Java for a slice of Indonesian culture; Makukuhan bring exotic music education to you”

All students were highly engaged and loved used their hands as musical instruments to make lots of amazing rhythms and sounds.

A massive thank you to the P&C for paying for all Tighes Hill students to experience this excellent show and to Mrs Bowman for the photos.

Year 5 Sports Gala Day.

Year 5 students attended a sports gala day on Wednesday at Callaghan College Waratah Technology Campus.

We had lots of aching bodies from Crossfit the next day!

A big thanks to Ms Armstrong and Mrs Bowman for organising and attending this day!
