Today, Tighes Hill Public School had their NAIDOC celebrations. We celebrated the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The students took part in bead art, dancing, face painting, a traditional smoking ceremony and got to try some Kangaroo.
We had a special performance from the Millibah Cultural Group from the Hunter School of Performing Arts.
A massive thank you to Miss Chapman and the Aboriginal Education Commitee for organising such an excellent day and well done to our students for their enthusiasm and respectful behaviour.
Well done to The Sapphires who traveled to Sutherland on the weekend to compete in the NSW state Finals. The girls did so well and came fifth place in their division. We will still be training hard for our Spring Challenge competition coming up in September.
The girls will also perform at the Hall of Fame assembly on Monday at 2pm.
Every Wednesday, for four weeks, Year 5 students are participating in a careers through reading program with students from Newcastle University.
The program involves University students reading to small groups of primary school children books that are related to the Key Learning Areas the students are studying. This allows both Uni and school students to share their current experiences of education and aspiration to eventual professions in a friendly and non-threatening space.
Year 5 are loving this experience. Have a look at our photos.
On Tuesday we had the Questacon Circus come to our school and put on a great science show for us. Have a look at some of the photos.
